A Discussion with the Center for Global Affairs’ first Capstone team:

A Framework for Sustainable Development with
Case Studies in Global Warming, Corruption, and Organized Crime

Join us to hear our first CAPSTONE group defend their thesis. This Capstone project, an interdisciplinary final research project in completion of the M.S. in Global Affairs, is the work of six members of the Global Affairs Class of 2007: Patrick Benz, Wayne Moses Burke, Daniel Feltsman, Brad Good, Maria Herbruger and Sofia Perazzo, working with faculty advisor Robert Lane Greene.

We welcome the NYU Community and those interested in global affairs to a night of knowledge sharing, stimulating conversation, and refreshments.

Sustainable Development is broadly defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Though this is the most widely accepted definition, the conditions required to achieve sustainability are debatable.

Our project illustrates that sustainable development rests on the three pillars of good governance, environmental sustainability and cultural sensitivity.  Only when the three main actors of the international system – government, private sector and civil society – fulfill their responsibilities in constructing these pillars, will we reap the long-term benefits associated with sustainability.

Upon discussing the fundamental responsibilities of each actor, we review three global issues that undermine the conditions of sustainability: global warming from an international law perspective; corruption from the private sector perspective; and transnational organized crime from an economic perspective.
